Book Description
Young Thomas is the son of a Knight whose lands are on the outskirts of the kingdom of Noruff. Tragedy took his mother and sister when he was a baby, leaving him to be looked after by servants while his two older brothers flourish in their father's shadow.
When the older brothers, William and Franklin, excel at a tournament celebrating the union of two royal families, they are rewarded by the King of Noruff in being called to train and serve in the Royal Guard. It is during this same celebration that Thomas loses his heart to an unidentified red haired girl, only to discover that she is a young princess far beyond his realm of acquaintances. He also crosses paths with the dark Prince Darius of a neighboring kingdom.
Time passes and Thomas becomes a young man of great skill, strength, and size. He longs for his own adventures. When news comes that the ship Franklin and William are serving on is lost at sea, Sir Bertrand falls into a deep sense of loss and shuts himself off from the world. Thomas must assume his father's duties in the outskirts of the kingdom.
Prince Darius returns as a cunning young man, a spy pretending to be in search of a bride. When Darius discovers Thomas' secret duties, he tries to use that knowledge for his own advantage, disrupting the balance of nature and of power.
Thomas finds himself facing an old enemy in Darius, and a new one in the ancient dragon, Maggwain. Everyone and everything he loves is at risk and Thomas must find a way to protect them all from deceit on one hand and the dragon's fury on the other.
In the end, Thomas discovers the truths that have long evaded him, and comes to understand the balance of power among men and in nature. His reward from the King of Noruff is far greater than anything he would ever have dared to dream for himself.
From the Author
Sir Thomas the Eggslayer is my first midddle grade chapter book. The story's central character is a young man searching for answers from his childhood while trying to fill his place and responsibilities in the kingdom of Noruff. He is linked to the ancient dragon, Maggwain, in more ways than he realizes.
Thomas discovers that it is wisdom to recognize enemies, but to live peacefully in the world with them whenever possible. He is a young man of strength, courage, and valor. Like his father before him, it is Thomas's desire to serve well rather than to rule. His rewards for serving faithfully are far greater than his dreams allowed.
