Book Description
O Crime do Padre Amaro, perhaps the greatest novel of Portuguese realism, is Queirós' criticism of the corrpution in the clergy of his time. A new priest, Father Amaro, arrives in the provincial capital Leiria, where he soon meets and falls in love with Amélia. She becomes pregnant, and is abandoned by Amaro. Heartbroken, Amélia dies. Faced with the existence of his newborn child when he is a 'disciple of God,' Amaro delivers the child to an infanticide, the 'maker of angels.'
About the Author
José Maria Eça de Queirós was trained as a lawyer, but chose journalism after becoming disillusioned with the law. Heavily influenced by French authors, Queirós began a series of novels, which he called Cenas Portuguesas (Portuguese Scenes), that would provide a critical analysis of Portuguese society. While he didn't pursue the idea rigorously, O Crime do Padre Amaro was one of the novels that arose from this idea. In 1872 Eça began a diplomatic career, which he pursued for the rest of his life. After serving in Cuba and England, he was transferred to France and died in Paris in 1900.
