The theme of hopelessnes is explored in the context of relationships and lifestyle choices in the modern city in this dark, humorous novel. Guido has spent half his life in misery, and his sister Gilda is also running headfirst into an abysmal life. They find themselves, however, finally emerging from the long depression that has been destroying them. Set in Barcelona, the story features urban characters who are tortured by their troubled pasts, struggling with the tremendous difficulties associated with rebuilding their lives, and forced to make painful decisions when situations are out of their control.
La narración, de carácter eminentemente urbano, transcurre en la ciudad de Barcelona. Los personajes, indecisos, torturados por su pasado y por sus dificultades para hallar salidas a sus problemas personales, se mueven sin rumbo, obligados a tomar decisiones dolorosas o absurdas empujados por acontecimientos por no pueden controlar. Guido ha pasado la mitad de su existencia cubriéndose de miseria y Gilda, su hermana, corriendo hacia el abismo. Ambos se encuentran en el momento en que despiertan de un letargo demasiado largo que, en principio, ha arruinado sus vidas. Entre ellos y la vida nueva, están las personas que acaban de llegar, los que se fueron, los muertos y los vivos.
