Book Description
A codependent searching for aliens in his backyard, a meandering hobo who finds success in a discarded sandwich, a tie-dyed sex offender, the disenchanted Reverend Clamm, a zealot who preaches in shopping malls (baptizing in the coin-fountains), and a widowed accountant whose philosophy hinges upon his ability never to blink again.
These are some of the characters Adam Russell encounters during his crisis of faith and self-worth. "The average weight for his height, the average height for his age, the average age for his position in life," he gradually loses confidence in his job, his friends, his future and his God.
Enter Rachel Roser, a fourteen-year-old who falls for him and moves in (against his will) to escape her emotionally-vacant father. She will be discovered eventually, but he is too sympathetic to turn her away.
This is the story of his undoing.
