Hymen Rosenblatt Hennessey is the son of Mick and Bea Hennessey. Bea often refers to Mick as an "alte kaker." This term is Yiddish and loosely translates as old fart. Theirs is not a marriage made in heaven. As a result, Hymie becomes an introverted, dependent young man who Bea resolves to protect from her crotchety little mate and to ensure that Hymie does not make any bad decisions or, in fact, any decisions at all. Bea finds Hymie his first job (out of school) at the Maurice M. Mukitup Memorial Medical Center. There, Hymie meets Gladys, his potty-mouthed, cigar-smoking boss; an egocentric plastic surgeon, specializing in creating "heavenly bodies; Turtlesbutt, Tennessee's own Big Benny Balhoon; and other bizarre characters. Hymie's life really heads for the dumper as he embarks on a two-day train trip east to Chicago to bury his father's cremains. He is drawn into a comically, convoluted misadventure that involves quirky characters, surprise twists, and, finally, true independence.
